Caught Ian Stroud (@strood) (above, far right) performing at New Team Harold last night at UCB. He had a great show and was in such a funny class. Watching your best friends performing with other people/relative strangers is a very enjoyable, edifying experience. After you perform for a couple of years with someone—as Ian and I have—watching him perform with other people shows different facets to his performance style. Improv is a collaborative endeavor so you perform differently based on the people you’re with. I think growth in improv is dependent on finding a balance between developing a lasting performance relationship with people and experiencing performing with a lot of different people. Performing with just old friends can make you lazy from familiarity while performing with just strangers can you make you too independent a player in a detrimental way to forming group mind.
Anyway, happy he was up first before I went backstage to warm-up with Deckard who kicked off Harold Night last night with a solid show. Deckard is a team I am enjoying learning to play with; we challenge each other on stage to be hyper-supportive and every rehearsal or show together, I come away feeling a little more in tune with them and a little stronger as a performer.
